Program Overview
Study in Ecuador, one of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse countries in South America. Cascading waterfalls, wild llamas and high-soaring condors are just a few of the natural wonders you may see-from the coast in Manabi Province to the high Andean peak of the Cotopaxi, Ecuador offers the opportunity to study a variety of equatorial ecosystems, including volcanic peaks, mangrove swamps, tropical cloud forests, high altitude grasslands and Galapagos Island habitats. You'll study the native flora of the Andes, and observe how the region's plants and their ecology within the context of a developing country. You'll also learn about Ecuador's past and present; the program includes trips to Incan ruins and to the Monument to the Middle of the World (at the Equator), as well as a long-distance field experience traveling through small towns along the Pan-American highway. Winter Session in Ecuador offers you an enriching academic adventure in one of the world's most beautiful settings.
Students will be based in historic Quito, Ecuador's capital and its second largest city where they will live with Ecuador families. They will also visit the cities of Manabi Province, Santo Domingo, and Riobamba. During the last week of the course, students will do a long-distance trip down the Pan-American highway to Cuenca and spend four days in the Galapagos. Explorations of native plants in the high Andes will also be supplemented by a field trip to the Amazon.
Students will be housed while in Quito with Ecuadorian families through the homestay program at the Catholic University. Meals are not included while in Quito.
