Program Overview
The Department of Fashion & Apparel Studies, in partnership with the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC) at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) offers apparel design and fashion merchandising students the opportunity to study abroad in Hong Kong during the fall or spring semesters. HKPU is a world-class institution with comprehensive education in fashion technology, fashion and textile design, fashion and textile marketing and merchandising, and fashion retailing. They have excellent facilities and close ties with industry.
General Info / Student Life
The University: HkPU has programs in fashion technology, fashion and textile design, fashion and textile marketing and merchandising, and fashion retailing. The school has 11,500 full-time and 5,000 part-time undergraduate students. It has student exchange agreements with over 120 institutions in more than 18 countries and hundreds of international students study at HKPU every year.
Language: English.
Calendar : Fall (first) semester runs early-September through mid January. Spring (second) semester runs late January through mid-June.
Visas and Passports: Both are required for U.S. citizens. HKPU applies for the appropriate visa on behalf of exchange students. Students therefore do not need to apply for the visa in the Chinese Embassy at their home countries.
Transportation: Hong Kong has an extensive bus and subway system and students may purchase a monthly pass for unlimited travel within the city.
Housing: Student residence halls located near the campus are available to UD exchange students. Accommodations in the residence halls run about HK$1,200 per month.
Courses: Courses are taught in English and can vary from semester to semester. The course offerings include some courses that can be substituted for apparel design or fashion merchandising required courses, and a variety of other courses that can be taken as electives. See the Department of Fashion & Apparel or your advisor for more information about courses.
Costs: Students pay their regular undergraduate full-time tuition to the University of Delaware via normal UD billing and payment procedures; they do not pay on-campus housing or meal plan. Students do not pay a deposit or program fee to the Center for International Studies. Any financial aid or scholarships that normally apply to tuition will continue to apply.
Students may expect to spend about HK$5,300 per month in living expenses which includes accommodation in student residence halls, food, local transportation, laundry, books and stationery, and miscellaneous expenses. All travel expenses are the responsibility of the student.
Requirements
University of Delaware students who are majoring in Apparel Design or Fashion Merchandising are eligible to apply.
Application for this program requires all of the following:
- Completion of an endorsement for student exchange with the Department of Fashion & Apparel Studies (due September 5 for spring semester exchange and February 15 for fall semester exchange). Endorsement forms are available at http://www.udel.edu/fash/undergrad/studentexchange.html. Completed form is submitted in 211 Alison West.
- Completion of the online application through the Center for International Studies (reached via the Apply Now button in the menu to the left) (due September 5 for spring semester exchange and February 15 for fall semester exchange.
- Students accepted for exchange are required to submit an application to HKPU (due at Hong Kong Polytechnic University by October 1 for spring semester exchange and by April 15 for fall semester exchange. Links to the application forms will be provided by Dr. Dickson upon acceptance into the program. When you submit application to HKPU, you will need to include the following documents: (1) a resume in English, (2) official university transcript showing all university courses taken in the past as well as courses in which you are currently enrolled, (3) a copy of your passport identification page (valid through the exchange period), (4) financial documents from a ban verifying financial support of HK$20,000. If you are not the account owner, the account owner should write a declaration that you will be financially supported, (5) Visa application forms (the Department of Fashion & Apparel Studies will provide a website address with the necessary
