Kalmar, Sweden Undergraduate Business Exchange

Program Overview

The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, in partnership with the Baltic Business School at the University of Kalmar offers business students the opportunity to study abroad in Kalmar , Sweden while taking business courses during the fall or spring semesters. The University of Kalmar combines the Baltic Business School —a school of economics that focuses on the Baltic Sea Region—with extensive course offerings in media, design, international management and bioscience. The University of Kalmar has exchange partnerships with Universities all over the world and welcomes around 100 exchange students each year .

 

 

General Info / Student Life

The University: Kalmar is a beautiful university town with its old monuments and a mixture of the wooden and modern buildings. The number of inhabitants is rather low, with only some sixty thousand inhabitants and with approximately 10 000 students at the University of Kalmar , it is easy to have a good connection with fellow students. The Baltic Sea and the unique island of Öland , just a stone's throw away from the mainland, contribute to the intimate atmosphere of Kalmar where past meet present.

Calendar : This program is available for the Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall semester runs early September through late December (just before the holidays). Applications for Fall are due April 15. The Spring Semester runs mid January through the beginning of June. Applications for Spring are due October 15.

Language: The language of instruction at the University of Kalmar is English.

Visas and Passports: US students must have a valid passport and residence permit (1000 SEK) before coming to Sweden . A visa may also be required to study in Sweden . It is possible to apply for a visa and residence permit through the Swedish Embassy or Consulate in the student's home country . For further information contact the Swedish Consulate that has jurisdiction over your permanent place of residence.

Transportation: There is good bus transportation in Kalmar but the most common way to get around is by bicycle as the distances are rather short. You can buy a second-hand bike for approximately 500 SEK.

Housing: As an exchange student you are guaranteed accommodation. The university's housing company will assist you in securing an appropriate residence. For more information visit www.kalmarhem.se and click on the English flag. The cost of furnished student accommodation is currently approximately SEK 3000 per month.

Courses: All courses are taught in English and can vary from semester to semester. The course offerings include introductory business courses as well as electives in Economics, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Management. Business students may take up to two upper-division courses in their major at Kalmar .

Costs : Students pay their regular undergraduate full-time tuition to the University of Delaware via normal UD billing and payment procedures; they do not pay on-campus housing or meal plan. Students do not pay a deposit or program fee to the Center for International Studies. Any financial aid or scholarships that normally apply to tuition will continue to apply.

All students are required to pay approximately 250 SEK in fees to become a member of the Student Union. Here is an estimated monthly budget for an exchange student ($1US = 7 SEK):

Local travel 200 SEK
Telephone 400
Leisure: 500 SEK
Miscellaneous 200 SEK

Total: 7300 SEK per month

 

Requirements

University of Delaware students who are sophomores or juniors majoring in Economics, Accounting, Management, Marketing, Operations Management, International Business or Finance are eligible to apply. A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 is required.

Students apply to the University of Kalmar directly after receiving a nomination from the Advising Office in the Lerner College of Business and Economics.
