Lisbon, Portugal Undergraduate Business Exchange
Program Overview
The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, in partnership with ISCTE (Instituto Superior de Ciencias do Trabalho e da Empresa) offers business students the opportunity to study abroad in Lisbon while taking business courses during the fall or spring semesters. ISCTE was founded in 1972 and is the largest business school in Portugal .
General Info / Student Life
The University: ISCTE Business School has three Academic Departments: Finance/Accounting, Quantitative Methods, and Management. The Management department has four scientific areas – General Management, Human Resources, Marketing, and Technology/Operations. The school has 2,000 undergraduate students, 12% of which are international, representing over 25 different countries.
Language: English for exchange courses.
Calendar : Fall semester runs mid-September through December. Applications for fall semester are due April 15. Spring semester runs mid February through June. Applications for Spring semester are due October 15.
Visas and Passports: Both are required for U.S. citizens. Contact the Portuguese consulate that has jurisdiction over your permanent place of residence. You should also review the consulate's website for a list of documents you are required to present to obtain your student visa. At a minimum, these will include: (1) an acceptance letter from ISCTE, (2) proof of medical insurance, (3) a notarized guarantee of financial resources (from your parents or from your bank), (4) your passport (valid at least 6 months after the date you return), (5) separate passport photographs. Remember to make all necessary photocopies before going to the consulate.
Transportation: Lisbon has an extensive bus and subway system and students may purchase a monthly pass for unlimited travel within the city.
Housing: ISCTE opened a dormitory in 2007 that is available to UD exchange students. If you prefer off-campus housing, the program coordinators will assist you in locating an apartment. Housing costs will be approximately €250 per month.
Courses: Exchange program courses are taught in English and can vary from semester to semester. The course offerings include introductory business courses as well as electives in Finance, Marketing, and Management. Business students may take up to two upper- division courses in their major at ISCTE.
Costs: Students pay their regular undergraduate full-time tuition to the University of Delaware via normal UD billing and payment procedures; they do not pay on-campus housing or meal plan. Students do not pay a deposit or program fee to the Center for International Studies. Any financial aid or scholarships that normally apply to tuition will continue to apply.
In addition, students may expect to spend between €1,000 and €1,200 per month in living expenses which includes rent, utilities, telephone service, local transportation, and groceries. All travel expenses are the responsibility of the student.
Requirements
University of Delaware students who are sophomores or juniors majoring in Economics, Accounting, Management, Marketing, Operations Management, International Business Studies or Finance are eligible to apply. A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 is required.
Students apply directly to ISCTE after receiving a nomination from the Advising Office in the Lerner College of Business and Economics.
