Program Overview
The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, in partnership with the University of Mannheim offers business students the opportunity to study abroad in Mannheim while taking business courses during the fall or spring semesters. The University of Mannheim , founded in 1907, has a strong international orientation with connections to 150 institutions throughout the world. The university has a clear focus on business administration, economics and the social sciences.
General Info / Student Life
The University: Mannheim 's vibrant cultural life together with the surrounding area with an abundance of recreational opportunities makes it the place to be in the heart of Europe . The Palatinate, Germany 's largest wine-growing region, Heidelberg with its romantic flair and the Odenwald 's many castles are close to the city. Frankfurt, the financial hub of Germany , is less than an hour away by car or train.
The University of Mannheim was was named the 'best German university according to 600 German HR managers' in 2004 by the business magazine karriere ( Handelsblatt publishing group). Additionally, Mannheim is the only German institution to be accredited by AACSB International, EQUIS and AMBA , the three leading international accreditation organizations ( ' Triple Crown ' ). The university has 11,000 students; 10 percent come from abroad.
Calendar : This program is available for the Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall semester runs early September through late December (just before the holidays). Applications for Fall are due April 15. The Spring Semester runs mid January through the end of May. Applications for Spring are due October 15.
Language: Exchange courses are all taught in English.
Visas and Passports: A valid passport is necessary to enter Germany . US citizens do NOT need a visa to study in Germany . Students from EU Member States, EFTA countries ( Iceland , Lichtenstein , Norway and Switzerland ), Australia , Canada , Israel , Japan , Korea , and New Zealand likewise do NOT need a visa. Please contact the German consulate that has jurisdiction over your permanent place of residence for further information.
Transportation: The University is located near the train station and is well connected to the local public transportation system (bus, tram and train).
Housing: The University of Mannheim offers several dormitories throughout the city, which are available to exchange students. The average cost of the dorms is €230 per month.
Courses: Exchange program courses are taught in English and can vary from semester to semester. The course offerings include introductory business courses as well as electives in Economics, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Management. Business students may take up to two upper-division courses in their major at Mannheim .
Costs : Students pay their regular undergraduate full-time tuition to the University of Delaware via normal UD billing and payment procedures; they do not pay on-campus housing or meal plan. Students do not pay a deposit or program fee to the Center for International Studies. Any financial aid or scholarships that normally apply to tuition will continue to apply.
The cost of living for students in Mannheim is estimated to be, on average, between €600-€750 per month. This includes rent in a dorm at €230 per month, meals, health insurance, books & materials, and incidental expenses. Students are responsible for all travel expenses.
Requirements
University of Delaware students who are sophomores or juniors majoring in Economics, Accounting, Management, Marketing, Operations Management, International Business or Finance are eligible to apply. A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 is required.
Students apply directly to the University of Mannheim after receiving a nomination from the Advising Office in the Lerner College of Business and Economics.
