Program Notes
This program is highly competitive and will accept only a limited number of applicants. Interview appointments and acceptance decisions are at the discretion of the faculty director.
Program Description
Study Fluid Mechanics and Transportation Engineering in Melbourne, Australia, a vibrant multi-modal city known for beautiful beaches, wide boulevards, fine parks and restaurants, festivals, and great summer weather. Students will also enjoy the opportunity to live in a city consistently selected as "the most liveable city in the world.".


The Fluid Mechanics course will help establish a proper understanding of the value and environmental costs of water development projects. The Transportation Engineering course will focus on multi-modal transportation in urban areas.

Melbourne provides rich opportunities for multi-modal transportation – ride a tram, a train and a bus, as well as see in practice innovative partnerships operating highways. Students will have many opportunities to meet Australian people famous for their humor, optimism, and healthy outdoor lifestyle. Program participants will also meet non-human wildlife including many strange, wonderful animals and birds, as well as seeing much of the exotic and spectacular flora of the region.

Housing will be in University dormitories and about 1/2 meals will be included in the program fee.

The program also includes tours in the state of Victoria (Wilson's Prom) and elsewhere in Australia, most notably Tasmania. The trip to Tasmania includes visiting both Hobart and Launceston. In Hobart we visit Bonorong, a wildlife sanctuary, to provide the students with an opportunity to have face-to-face contact with some of Australia's unique animals. We also visit the oldest bridge in Australia and travel over and under the Derwent River bridge that was made famous when it collapsed after being hit by a ship. In Launceston, we visit the Australian Maritime College (AMC). AMC provides a tour of their large scale lab facilities that use the concepts taught in the Fluid Mechanics course. We also stop at Freycinet, a spectacular national park and visit Port Arthur, an important penal colony in the early days of Australia. These place provide additional context for the student to help them understand the unique history and natural environment.

We also schedule a day trip to Wilson's Prom, a National Park, is the southern-most point on the Australian mainland. It is relatively remote (about 3 hrs from Melbourne) and presents some interesting transportation challenges. It is also relatively pristine.

We will also visit Sydney, Australia's largest city, world renowned for its magnificent Opera House and its beautiful harbour.

The Program Fee includes housing in University dormitories, about 1/2 meals and international medical insurance.

The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to or from Australia, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Melbourne. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. For this program, plane tickets have been reserved for the group, and students are strongly encouraged to purchase as part of the group reservation.

Students who are U.S. citizens should also budget an estimated $20 to cover the cost of their ETA-Visa to enter Australia. Students who hold passports from other countries may have other visa requirements and/or additional expenses.

ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.
Program Courses
Students must enroll in all credit-bearing courses for a grade. Only the UNIV (zero credit) course may be taken pass/fail. Audit registration is not permitted on UD Travel Study. Please refer to the University Catalog to verify requirements and prerequisites
Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for approval (check before departure).
All students must enroll in at least 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.
The two courses are integrated and some common engineering and management issues will be addressed in both courses.
CIEG 305-070: Fluid Mechanics (3 credits)
Fluid mechanics uses knowledge from mathematics, physics, statics and dynamics to analyze problems involving the fluid medium. Incompressible fluid mechanics: fluid statics, control volume analysis of fluid flows, differential analysis of inviscid and viscous fluid flows and dimensional analysis.
Prerequisite: MATH 302 or MATH 351
CIEG 351-070: Transportation Engineering (3 credits)
This is a required class for Civil Engineers and an elective for the Mechanical and Environmental Engineers. Four components of transportation: vehicle, way, terminal and control; design and dynamic characteristics of vehicles; geometric design of highways and railroad tracks; operation and design of stations, airports and bus terminals; highway traffic flow analysis.
UNIV 370-015: Study Abroad - Australia CIEG (0 credits) pass/fail
Students are asked to reflect upon changes in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes that occur due to their study abroad experience.

Requirements
All applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). While this program is designed primarily for mechanical and civil engineering students, other engineering undergraduates and other science majors are invited to apply and may be accepted on a space-available basis. Minimum prerequisite requirements for all students are (i) one year of calculus on the level of Math 241/242, and (ii) introductory physics equivalent to Phys 207.

Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged.

For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including at least one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

A transcript is required from Non-UD applicants only. Non-UD students, please send a copy of your official transcript to: IGS, Clayton Hall, 100 David Hollowell Drive, Newark, DE 19716 USA.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. Please review the study abroad acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we encourage you to apply to another program.
Costs
How much does it cost?.
  • University of Delaware Tuition/Fees for one Winter Session
  • Travel Study Program Fee
    • Usually covers: housing, all program-related excursions and some meals (check with the program's faculty director for details).
    • Does NOT cover: airfare to/from the program site and ground transportation to/from the U.S. departure airport. For planning purposes only, we estimate roundtrip airfare to be approximately $2,800.00.
  • Plan ahead for how to pay for travel study, and make sure you understand the costs associated with your program.
When and how do I pay?
If you are offered acceptance to the program, you will have 3 days to withdraw without financial penalty. After the 3 days have passed, you will be officially accepted to the program, and IGS will post the full Program Fee and Tuition/Fees to your UD student account.
  • An initial payment of $1000.00 will be due in mid-May.
  • The balance of the Program Fee and Tuition/Fees will be due in early January.
  • Payments are submitted through My Finances in UDSIS.
  • All charges, once posted to your account, are considered non-refundable.
Other important things to note:
  • Program Fees are subject to change until the group's departure date. Final Program Fees may increase due to unforeseen local cost increases, fluctuations in exchange rates, or changes in the group size.
  • IGS reserves the right to cancel a program at any time due to under-enrollment, safety/health/security issues, staffing issues, or any other relevant reason. If your program is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of all Program Fees paid.
