Program Description

Complete your student teaching in Athens, the capital and largest city in Greece. Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities, with history dating back to thousands of years. The city is home to the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and many impressive museums. Located in southeastern Europe, Greece is considered to be the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa.

Student teaching takes place at the American Community School (ACS) Athens. ACS Athens is a student-centered international school, embracing American educational philosophy, principles and values. The student body represents over 60 countries and is very culturally diverse. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (by the same accreditation body as UD), and offers a U.S. High School Diploma and the opportunity for students to earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma. All instruction is in English.

This program is a 12-week, full-day student teaching experience lasting just short of 90 days. No visa is required for students who are U.S. citizens and who visit the country for fewer than 90 days. Students wishing to remain in Greece or the European Union for more than 90 days must apply for and obtain the appropriate visa on their own before departure.

Classroom assignments may range from pre-kindergarten through second grade, depending on students' needs for certification. Students will participate in the teaching hours and responsibilities of the primary classroom teacher. They will also be assigned an on-site clinical educator and will be supervised by a University of Delaware field instructor via electronic conferencing and video observations, although no University faculty or staff will accompany the students. ACS Athens staff will be available to assist with any problems that may arise.

Note: Students are required to be present on the Newark campus to attend classes during the week prior to departure and for one day at the end of UD's semester and are responsible for all necessary lodging and transportation arrangements.

The Program Fee includes international health insurance, as well as housing in a furnished apartment with a kitchen to be shared with at least one other University of Delaware student near the ACS Athens or a metro line that can be used to travel to and from the school.

The Program Fee does not include airfare to/from Athens or transportation to and from the airport . The program officially begins when students arrive in Athens. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining and how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimated airfare.

The Institute for Global Studies cooperates with the College of Education and Human Development on the administration of this program.
ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.
Program Courses
Students must enroll in all credit-bearing courses for a grade. Only the UNIV (zero credit) course may be taken pass/fail. Audit registration is not permitted on UD Travel Study. Please refer to the University Catalog to verify requirements and prerequisites
All students must enroll in at least 12 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.
EDUC 400-070: Student Teaching (6 credits)
A capstone course for all education majors. This is a full-time extended student teaching experience in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade schools. Teacher candidates are under the guidance and supervision of clinical educators(s) and supervisor. This experience allows teacher to demonstrate their knowledge acquired in their undergraduate courses and apply it to their teaching.
Prerequisite: Students must show evidence of passing a basic competency test and must show evidence of taking content knowledge test(s) in their area(s) of certification as required by the University Council on Teacher Education. In addition, students must submit a complete State/Federal Criminal Background History check and a Child Protection Registry check to the Office of Clinical Studies prior to the beginning of the student teaching placement.

HDFS 425: Professional Development Seminar II (3 credits)
Continuation of HDFS424. Discussion-oriented and problem-centered seminar with emphasis on the role and contributions of the ECE professional; partnering with families in the development, care, and education of young children; building partnerships among families, agencies, schools, and communities; job search strategies; and professional portfolio development. This course will be taught in a hybrid format for study abroad students (in Newark pre-and post-program, and online during the time abroad).
HDFS 442: Advanced Inclusive Curriculum in Early Childhood II (3 credits)
Continuation of advanced study and application of child outcomes assessment, using assessment to guide curriculum planning, using technology to support curriculum and teaching of English/Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and the arts and social/emotional, fine and gross motor development. This course will be taught in a hybrid format for study abroad students (in Newark pre-and post-program, and online during the time abroad).
Prerequisite: HDFS 441
UNIV 373-029: Study Abroad: Athens Student Teaching - ECE (0 credits) pass/fail
Students are asked to reflect upon changes in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes that occur due to their study abroad experience.

Requirements
The International Student Teaching in Athens, Greece, is designed for senior Early Childhood Education majors for their second student teaching placement. Students will be provisionally approved pending successful completion of their first student teaching experience. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required, although candidates with slightly lower GPA’s may be considered if the rest of the application is strong and the candidate has shown improvement academically.

This program requires at least two recommendations, as well as two interviews: one with UD faculty and one online interview with staff from the local school.
For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including at least one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

A transcript is required from Non-UD applicants only. Non-UD students, please send a copy of your official transcript to: IGS, Clayton Hall, 100 David Hollowell Drive, Newark, DE 19716 USA.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. Please review the study abroad acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we encourage you to apply to another program.
Costs
How much does it cost?.
  • University of Delaware Tuition/Fees for one Spring Semester
  • Travel Study Program Fee
    • Usually covers: housing, all program-related excursions and some meals (check with the program's faculty director for details).
    • Does NOT cover: airfare to/from the program site and ground transportation to/from the U.S. departure airport. For planning purposes only, we estimate roundtrip airfare to be approximately $1,350.00.
  • Plan ahead for how to pay for travel study, and make sure you understand the costs associated with your program.
When and how do I pay?
If you are offered acceptance to the program, you will have 3 days to withdraw without financial penalty. After the 3 days have passed, you will be officially accepted to the program, and IGS will post the full Program Fee and Tuition/Fees to your UD student account.
  • An initial payment of $1000.00 will be due in mid-October.
  • The balance of the Program Fee and Tuition/Fees will be due in early January.
  • Payments are submitted through My Finances in UDSIS.
  • All charges, once posted to your account, are considered non-refundable.
Other important things to note:
  • Program Fees are subject to change until the group's departure date. Final Program Fees may increase due to unforeseen local cost increases, fluctuations in exchange rates, or changes in the group size.
  • IGS reserves the right to cancel a program at any time due to under-enrollment, safety/health/security issues, staffing issues, or any other relevant reason. If your program is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of all Program Fees paid.
