Program Notes
The November 20 deadline helps to ensure early internship placement and completion of all training visa documentation in a timely manner.

Once you have completed the online application, students are required to e-mail Dr. Hye-Shin Kim (hskim@udel.edu) the following:
  • Resume (please attach evidence that your resume has been reviewed by the University Career Services Center)
  • University transcript (unofficial transcript is accepted)
  • One-page cover letter to potential employees describing your skill sets and type of work placement that meets your interest (e.g., textiles and raw materials, marketing, retail, product development, sourcing, etc.). The letter must be thoroughly proof-read and error free.

After all paperwork has been received, the faculty director will contact you to schedule an interview. As part of the interview process, the faculty director will assess your preparedness with various questions including the following:
  • Why do you want to intern in Singapore?
  • Why are many multinational companies located in Singapore?
  • What do you know about Singapore’s culture, politics, and history?
  • What types of experience do you expect to gain in singapore that is different from working for a company within the United States?
Program Description
Gain professional business experience in Asia by participating in an 8-week internship experience in Singapore. Singapore is one of Asia’s central locations for international business. Singapore is major textile and apparel business sourcing hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

This internship is an unpaid training position that allows you to gain hands-on experience in a workplace environment. Drawing on their extensive network of partner organizations, Global Academic Ventures (GAV), will place students in some of Singapore's well known multinational corporations. Through this study abroad program, students will be able to broaden their understanding of the international fashion business environment and apply their knowledge within an industry setting. Newark-based faculty will provide one-on-one guidance through initial meetings on campus in Newark and via e-mail, Skype, and Canvas while students are abroad. Fully trained local staff will be provided to manage on-site logistics, assist with on-site issues, and provide information as needed. GAV will provide 24/7 student support including referring and/or accompanying students and faculty to appropriate services. Includes crises management assistance.

Students will work at their internship site approximately 40 hours per week. The study abroad features a multi-day welcome-to-Singapore orientation program, followed by an 8-week unpaid internship.

The program fee includes 58 nights of shared, air-conditioned accommodation with limited Internet access, breakfast on the first 4 mornings of the program, transportation to/from the local airport at designated times, public transportation passes for each participant including SGP20.00 credit, welcome and farewell group meals, orientation in Singapore over the first two days in the country, full day trip of city sightseeing, two catch up dinners, and international medical insurance. The Singapore staff managing on-site logistics are also available 24/7 for students to contact in the event of an emergency.

The program fee does NOT include airfare, visa, most meals, and local ground transportation after the first few days. Students are responsible for ALL flight arrangements and for arriving at the Singapore airport at the designated time.

Optional excursions from Singapore are available on the weekends and may be purchased for an additional fee.

Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare.

U.S. citizens should budget $175 for visa expenses. Students who are citizens of other countries may have other visa requirements. Although instructions will be provided on how to apply for a Work Holiday Pass (visa) online, applying for a visa is the student's responsibility. GAV will help make an appointment to pick up the visa 1 or 2 days after arriving in Singapore
ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.
