The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates.

If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. In this case, the University of Delaware will reimburse the cost of program fees, tuition and flights (if purchase was advised by IGS).
Program Description
Complete the requirements for your Health Behavior Science degree by earning nine credits of internship coursework in Sydney, the capital of the state of New South Wales and, with over 4 million people, the most populous city in Australia. Located on the southeastern coast of the country, on the Tasman Sea, Sydney was established in 1788 as the site of the first British colony on the continent. Sydney Harbor, home to the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge, offers a wonderful backdrop for getting to know the city's cosmopolitan and international inhabitants, known as Sydneysiders. Visitors to Sydney will agree that the city has a reputation as an international center for commerce, arts, fashion, culture, entertainment, music, education, and tourism. During the 12-week internship semester students will also gain firsthand insight into one or more aspects of Austraila's healthcare industry.

Internship: The University of Delaware partners with CISAbroad to offer this internship experience. Interns may be placed at a variety of health care facilities (for example public clinics or private hospitals), schools, NGOs, or community-based public health organizations in the greater Sydney area. Students will typically work a full 8-hour day Monday through Friday and will be assigned a supervisor within the local organization who will provide periodic performance evaluations as required by UD. Senior BHAN students will work with the Chairperson of the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition via distance learning to earn nine credits for the BHAN 464 course, while local CISAbroad staff oversee the experience on site. For more information on the BHAN internship course and its requirements, and for tips on developing a resume, see the resources at the bottom of this page.

Visa: Students are required to obtain a "Working Holiday Visa" in order to intern in Australia and should budget $400 for this expense. Students will receive instructions for applying for the visa after acceptance to the program, though obtaining the visa is the students' responsibility.

Accommodation: Students will be housed in shared rooms in fully furnished apartments with kitchens internet access located close to the Surry Hills neighborhood of Sydney, which is situated south-east of the city's central business district and close to public transportation. Apartments my not be air conditioned.

The Program Fee includes international health insurance, shared-room apartment housing, internship placement and local oversight, airport pick-up service upon arrival, welcome and farewell dinners, and program-sponsored excursions and cultural activities.

The Program Fee does not include airfare to/from Sydney or return transportation to the airport. The program officially begins when students arrive in Sydney. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining and how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimated airfare. Students are also responsible for all meals and for local transportation costs to/from their internship placement.

The Institute for Global Studies cooperates with the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition on the administration of this program
ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.
