Program Notes | |
|
Note:
If you do not have a current passport, you should be aware that COVID-19 has delayed passport processing times significantly. The U.S. State Department has announced that it now takes an average of 18 weeks (4.5 months) to process a passport.
Given the circumstances, if you want to study abroad in 2022, you need to apply for or renew your passport NOW - even if you’re not 100% sure about your study abroad plans yet. We recommend expediting both the processing time and the shipping time for your passport.
Please check program pages regularly or follow @UDGlobal on Instagram or Twitter for updated information on applying for a 22W study abroad program.
Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates.
If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. In this case, the University of Delaware will reimburse the cost of program fees, tuition and flights (if purchase was advised by CGPS).
If quarantine is still in effect in the fall, this program will be cancelled. |

Program Description | |
|
How is the experience of disability influenced by the culture in which one lives? What factors influence the services and supports available to people with disabilities? Students in this 3-week micro-mester program will examine these questions in the context of Thailand. Students will engage with educational institutions, community services, government organizations, and advocacy groups to learn about the way people with disabilities live, learn, work, and play in Thailand.
All students will take a course (DIST 301) that considers disability from individual, family, and community perspectives with an emphasis on understanding issues of access and inclusion in everyday life. In addition to academic field visits in Bangkok and Chon Buri, students will have the opportunity to appreciate Thai culture through excursions to the Grand Palace, temples, museums, and local markets.
Students will stay in a hotel (two to a room) in the Phaya Thai district of Bangkok, a residential area with access to a variety of city amenities. Transportation for all in-country program activities will be provided via bus, taxi, or BTS Sky Train. All breakfasts and some group meals are included.
The Program Fee includes hotel accommodations, some group meals, all group excursions, and transportation in country.
The Program Fee does not include airfare to or from Thailand, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Bangkok, Thailand. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimated airfare. |
|
ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability SupportServices to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs. |

DIST 301: Disability Studies: Disability & Diversity inThailand (3 credits) |
We will learn about experiences of disability within Thai culture. Thailand offers students the opportunity to examine the influence of diverse religious, family, social service, and governmental approaches to disability that are largely different from the U.S. context while also sharing some common foci (e.g., improving inclusive education and employment outcomes for people with disabilities). We will consider disability from individual, family, and community perspectives across time with an emphasis on understanding issues of access and inclusion in everyday life. |
|
UNIV 370-235: Study Abroad - Thailand DIST (0 credits) pass/fail |
