Program Description
Program Overview

Leaders of the Free World (LFW), established in 2014, is an international experience and leadership development program for young Black men. The LFW mission is to develop dynamic leaders who are globally-minded, self-aware, and service-driven.

Along with the opportunity for international exposure, LFW students engage in learning and reflection activities that target the social and psychological barriers to academic success, retention, and empowered leadership.

LFW’s goal is to create a network of leaders whose development impacts their own lives and their communities; growing the next generation of changemakers, entrepreneurs, and mentors.

General Info

The Global Leadership Development program is a 3-tiered experience, which engages participants in leadership development activities and assignments before, during, and after their 2-week international experience in Ghana.

The LFW Global Leadership Development Program encompasses Three Phases:
  • (Phase 1) Students participate in a required 4 month virtual Pre-Departure program that includes group discussions, assignments, and lectures on leadership development and social awareness from industry-leading practitioners.
  • (Phase 2) Students travel to Ghana for a 2-week international experience exploring themes in leadership, intercultural activities, service-learning, and Ghanaian historical site visits. Within Ghana, students will travel to Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast.
  • (Phase 3) Students complete a required virtual re-entry program (12 weeks) that includes personal goal-setting and building a success plan, to help them integrate their experience into their academic and professional goals.

Students are paired with an accountability partner and mentor and gain access to a network of leaders from various industries.

ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed.
