Program Notes | |
|
Please review the CGPS COVID-19 Updates page before applying to a study abroad program.
All applicants must have a valid passport by the program’s application deadline. Your passport’s expiration date must be more than six months after the program ends. If you do not have a current passport, apply through the U.S. State Department. It takes an average of 8-11 weeks (2-3 months) to process a passport.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates.
If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. In this case, the University of Delaware will reimburse the cost of program fees and tuition.
Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time. |

Program Description | |
|
What does it take to be a successful global leader in today’s and tomorrow’s interconnected world? Increasingly, the answer is “cultural intelligence”: the ability to understand, appreciate differences, communicate, adapt, and strategize in intercultural environments and situations. To be culturally intelligent, however, one must also understand how the "common good" is interpreted in different cultures.
Spend two weeks in Volterra under the Tuscan sun in the heart of Italy. Then board the Celebrity Edge cruise ship for a 7 day cruise from Rome to Barcelona with port stops in Corsica, Portofino, Cannes, and Palma De Malorca, We will use these settings and experiences to explore how leaders are using cultural intelligence to advance their organizations, determine the common good, and cultivate successful teams. Additionally, by exploring ways in which specific leadership characteristics are valued differently in different cultures and settings, we will gain hands-on experience in practicing leadership, followership, and teamwork behaviors in a culture not our own. This micromester is open to all students in all majors.
Volterra is a walled city rich with landmarks of Etruscan, Roman and Medici Florentine history. Acclaimed by travel reviewers as Tuscany’s most beautiful and vibrant town, it will be evident why the Twilight movies were filmed in Volterra. We will visit museums, cathedrals and artisan and craft shops. Discover local restaurants and bistros as you make your way down winding streets. Our excursions from Volterra will take us to many cities and towns in Italy, including Florence and Sienna. We will enjoy intimate talks with leaders who will discuss the challenges of developing innovative new programs and solutions, while reconciling local and global cultures.
On the cruise, ship officers will give us an “up close and personal” look at the leadership challenge of forming collaborative relationships among crew from dozens of different countries all over the world who bring with them different languages, customs, ethnicities and diverse cultural backgrounds. Port stops give us the opportunity to explore cultural differences that impact our understanding of what constitutes the common good. We will plan for an overnight in Barcelona before departing for home.
In Volterra, students will live in dormitory rooms on the Scuola Internazionaledi Alta Formazione (SIAF) campus. All meals are included, along with housekeeping services. On the cruise, students will be 2-3 in a cabin. All meals (in fact, all you can eat) onboard the ship are included.
Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, and no matter what your major or future professional plans, you can be a better leader because of this unique experience.
The Program Fee covers housing and all meals in Volterra at the SIAF, the cruise fare including cabin and all meals, hotel in Barcelona, gratuities, all program-related excursions and admission fees, and international medical insurance.
The Program Fee does NOT include airfare.
The program officially begins when students arrive in Volterra. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. For this program, students will be given recommended flight itineraries for traveling together. |
|
ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs. |

Understanding a variety of issues and problems that impact quality of life of individuals and groups and demand effective leadership in global contexts.
This study abroad section explores questions of leadership and the common good in global settings. As leaders, we strive to “do good.” But what constitutes the “common good?” Is there a universal and global understanding? Does our definition of what is good for a group, organization, team or society shift depending on country-specific norms? What role does a particular social or cultural system play in our understanding of social and environmental ethics? How do successful global leaders engage others in determining the “common good” for both individuals and society? Through on land and at-sea experiences, class sessions, and projects, we will come to more fully understand that leadership is not the same everywhere, nor do we have common definitions or understandings of what defines “the common good.” |
