Program Notes | |
|
This program is highly competitive and will accept only a limited number of applicants. Interview appointments and acceptance decisions are at the discretion of the faculty director. |
|
Note: Please check program pages regularly or follow @UDGlobal on Instagram or Twitter for updated information on applying for a 24W study abroad program.
Please review the CGPS COVID-19 Updates page before applying to a study abroad program for information about COVID-19 related travel requirements and policies for UD study abroad.
All applicants must have a valid passport by the program’s application deadline. Your passport’s expiration date must be more than six months after the program ends. If you do not have a current passport, apply through the U.S. State Department. It takes an average of 10 -13 weeks (3-4 months) to process a passport.
Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates. If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. |

Program Description | |
|
Down Under, the land of Oz, the Sunburnt Country, the Fatal Shore---Australia, ancient land and young nation, has many names, many landscapes and much to teach its visitors. Join us on a journey of discovery which will take us through time from the ancient creation stories of the Aboriginal cultures, the sufferings and triumphs of the First Fleet convicts, the colonial gold rush boom to the emergence of a state that has found its place on the world stage, as we study fictional and journalistic narratives that illuminate a vast continent.
Home-based at the Melbourne University, we will take excursions to the Great Ocean Road, Hanging Rock (the inspiration for and location of Peter Weir’s 1975 film), Philip Island to see the famous Penguin Parade, and the island of Tasmania; students will also have an optional afternoon watching world-class tennis at the Australian Open.
We will use the films, literature and journalism we study to illuminate our first-hand experiences; students will also create a travel blog on which they’ll report on their own experiences. Accommodations will be in residence halls. Some meals will be included on the road and all will be provided during our university stay.
Applicants from all majors are eagerly welcomed; one of the classes offered in the program fulfills the second-writing requirement.
The Program Fee covers housing in Uni Melbourne residence halls, in-country program-related excursions, some meals, and international medical insurance.
The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from Australia, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Melbourne. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. For this program, students will be given recommended flight itineraries for traveling together. Those who arrive at the Melbourne airport at the appointed time will be able to take advantage of the group bus to their lodging, as well as on return. Students who opt to arrive at a different time are responsible for traveling to their lodging independently and at their expense as instructed by the faculty director.
Students should also budget an estimated $20 to cover the cost of their ETA-Visa to enter Australia. Students who hold passports from other countries may have other visa requirements and/or additional expenses. |
|
ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs. |
