The December 6 deadline helps to ensure early internship placement and completion of all training visa documentation in a timely manner.
Once you have completed the online application, students are required to e-mail Dr. Hye-Shin Kim (hskim@udel.edu) the following:
- Resume (please attach evidence that your resume has been reviewed by the University Career Services Center)
- University transcript (unofficial transcript is accepted)
- One-page cover letter to potential employees describing your skill sets and type of work placement that meets your interest (e.g., textiles and raw materials, marketing, retail, product development, sourcing, etc.). The letter must be thoroughly proof-read and error free.
After all paperwork has been received, the faculty director will contact you to schedule an interview. As part of the interview process, the faculty director will assess your preparedness with various questions including the following:
- Why do you want to intern in Singapore?
- Why are many multinational companies located in Singapore?
- What do you know about Singapore’s culture, politics, and history?
- What types of experience do you expect to gain in Singapore that is different from working for a company within the United States?

All applicants must have a valid passport by the program’s application deadline. Your passport’s expiration date must be more than six months after the program ends. If you do not have a current passport, apply through the U.S. State Department. It takes an average of 8-11 weeks (2-3 months) to process a passport.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates.
If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. In this case, the University of Delaware will reimburse the cost of program fees and tuition.
Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time. |

| Program Description | |

An 8-week fashion internship in Singapore. This internship is an unpaid training position that allows you to gain hands-on experience in a multinational workplace environment. The internship will provide you practical experience to enhance your on-campus learning. Drawing on their extensive network of partner organizations, Global Academic Ventures (GAV) will place students in some of Singapore's well known multinational corporations. The primary goal of this program is to enhance student learning through firsthand knowledge of the global apparel business environment in Asia. Through the internship course, students will be able to broaden their understanding of the international fashion business environment and apply their knowledge within a field experience setting. Instructors will provide one-on-one guidance through initial meetings on campus in Newark and via e-mail, Zoom, and Canvas while students are abroad.
Students will work at their internship site approximately 40 hours per week. Actual work hours will vary depending upon job placement. This Internship Study Abroad Program features a multi-day orientation program, followed by an 8-week unpaid internship. A local representative of GAV will serve as the students’ resident coordinator while in their respective countries and assist with any problems or questions that may arise. Preference will be given to students majoring in Fashion and Apparel Studies with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the fashion industry after graduation. However, applications from non-fashion majors with business background are welcome. If you have questions about your qualifications for this program, please contact the Faculty Director.
The Program Fee includes:
- 58 nights of shared room accommodation in Singapore for students including breakfast on the first 4 mornings of the program.
- Airport Transfer to and from Singapore Airport to Singapore accommodation within arrival/departure window
- Public Transportation passes for each participant including SGP20.00 credit
- Welcome group dinner in Singapore
- Orientation in Singapore
- Limited Internet at accommodation
- Full day trip city sightseeing.
- 2 x catch up dinners
- 8-week internship for each student at a company based in Singapore for 5 days per week based on the company’s normal working hours
- Farewell group dinner in Singapore
- Fully trained staff will be provided to manage on-site logistics, assist with on-site issues, and provide information as needed.
- GAV will provide 24/7 student support including referring and/or accompanying students and faculty to appropriate services. Includes crises management assistance.
The Program Fee does NOT include airfare.
The program officially begins when students arrive in Singapore. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. For this program, students will be given recommended flight itineraries for traveling together. |

| Students must enroll in all credit-bearing courses for a grade. Only the UNIV (zero credit) course may be taken pass/fail. Audit registration is not permitted on UD Travel Study. Please refer to the University Catalog to verify requirements and prerequisites |

| FASH 320-070: Fashion and Apparel Internship (3 credits) |
| An off-campus supervised and coordinated field study program in fashion/apparel related areas. Singapore is one of Asia's central locations for international business. Singapore is now ranked second, after Hong Kong, as a textile and apparel business sourcing hub in the Asia-Pacific region. This course will be offered in an online format. |

The minimum GPA is 3.0 with class standing of SO, JR, and SR.
Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged. |

For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including at least one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by Zoom.
A transcript is required from Non-UD applicants only. Non-UD students, please email a copy of your official transcript to the Program Coordinator.
Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. Please review the study abroad acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we encourage you to apply to another program. |

How much does it cost?.
- University of Delaware Tuition/Fees for one Summer Session
- Travel Study Program Fee
- Usually covers: housing, all program-related excursions and some meals (check with the program's faculty director for details).
- Does NOT cover: airfare to/from the program site and ground transportation to/from the U.S. departure airport. For planning purposes only, we estimate roundtrip airfare to be approximately $1,700.00.
- Plan ahead for how to pay for travel study, and make sure you understand the costs associated with your program.

When and how do I pay?
If you are offered acceptance to the program, you will have 3 days to withdraw without financial penalty. After the 3 days have passed, you will be officially accepted to the program, and CGPS will post the full Program Fee and Tuition/Fees to your UD student account.
- An initial payment of $1000.00 will be due in mid-March.
- The balance of the Program Fee and Tuition/Fees will be due in early June.
- Payments are submitted through My Finances in UDSIS.
- All charges, once posted to your account, are considered non-refundable.

Other important things to note:
- Program Fees are subject to change until the group's departure date. Final Program Fees may increase due to unforeseen local cost increases, fluctuations in exchange rates, or changes in the group size.
- CGPS reserves the right to cancel a program at any time due to under-enrollment, safety/health/security issues, staffing issues, or any other relevant reason. If your program is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of all Program Fees paid.
