Program Notes | |
|
All applicants must have a valid passport by the program’s application deadline. Your passport’s expiration date must be more than six months after the program ends. If you do not have a current passport, apply through the U.S. State Department. It takes an average of 6-8 weeks (2 months) to process a passport.
Traveling and studying abroad at this time poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad must be prepared to adapt to evolving situations and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country which are subject to change at any time.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) and world events as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates. If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. |

Program Description | |
|
This program introduces students to the science, literature, and culture of Victorian London. Students will be based in London, United Kingdom, and will take courses in biology and literature. Students will enjoy the vibrant life of modern-day London, and will also trace the legacies of Victorian England in London today.
Based in London, you’ll also make day trips to Down House, Charles Darwin’s home and laboratory; Oxford, center of English higher education; and frequent excursions in London itself. Specifically, we will use our coursework and day trips to explore the cholera epidemic of 1854, which led to pioneering public health work by the scientist John Snow, and to deepen our understanding of Victorian London through studying Victorian literature and culture.
Students will reside in double rooms in apartments, and will be responsible for preparing the majority of their meals.
If you’re interested in seeing Big Ben and Westminster Abbey in person, want to immerse yourself in the science and literature of Victorian London, or if you would like to experience a traditional English afternoon tea, this Winter Session program is your chance.
The Program Fee includes accommodations in double rooms in shared apartments, group excursions, cultural events, and international medical insurance.
The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from London and airport transfers in the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in London. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. |
|
ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs. |

BISC 367-070: Seminar: The Story Behind the Science (3 credits) |
When we learn science it is presented as sterile and fact-based. Science and scientists are part of a living, breathing world and the straightforward discoveries that are presented in textbooks often have convoluted backstories. The relationship between science and society (both directions) has never been more apparent than it is currently. In this course we will utilize the story of Dr. John Snow and the first proper epidemiological study of a disease outbreak (an outbreak of Cholera in 1854 London) and the historical, political, religious and downright petty ego-based events that shaped the acceptance of this work.
This course will also ask you to reflect on the course content and your experience living in London, and extend your thinking beyond just what we discuss in class. |
|
ENGL 338-070: Studies in Victorian Literature (3 credits) |
Studies of significant British texts from the nineteenth century, the social forces they shaped, and those by which they were shaped. Content varies by expertise of instructor.
The 19th Century witnessed the invention of “the scientist” and “the detective” as two new character types in fiction. In this course we will read from texts like Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories and Charles Dickens’s Bleak House to better understand the culture informing John Snow’s cholera investigation. Assignments will include keeping a Victorian-style travel journal for the duration of our trip. |
