All applicants must have a valid passport by the program’s application deadline. Your passport’s expiration date must be more than six months after the program ends. Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates. If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. In this case, the University of Delaware will reimburse the cost of program fees and tuition. |

Program Description | |
|
Thailand Interest Meeting
How is the experience of disability influenced by the culture in which one lives? What factors influence the services and opportunities available to people with disabilities? Students in this 4-week program will examine these questions in the context of Thailand through sociocultural lenses. Students will engage with educational institutions, community services, government organizations, and advocacy groups to learn about the way people with disabilities live, learn, work, and play in Thailand.
All students will take two 3-credit courses. DIST 301 Disability & Diversity in Thailand considers disability from individual, family, and community perspectives with an emphasis on understanding issues of access and inclusion in everyday life. ENTR 451 International Social Entrepreneurship Ecosystems: Thailand focuses on the core concepts of social entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship ecosystems, with a focal point on enterprises and ecosystem supports that are with and by people with disabilities.
In addition to academic field visits, students will have the opportunity to appreciate Thai culture through excursions to the Grand Palace, local markets, an elephant sanctuary, and other attractions. Students will stay in hotels (two to a room). First, we will stay in a central district of Bangkok with access to a variety of city amenities. Then we will make a short flight to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand to experience the mountainous landscape and more rural cultures. Finally, we will visit Chon Buri, a seaside city about 80km southeast of Bangkok. Chon Buri is the location of Burapha University, our partner institution. The roundtrip flight to Chiang Mai is included in the program fee. Ground transportation between Bangkok and Chon Buri and for all program excursions will be provided. All breakfasts and some group meals are included.
The Program Fee includes hotel accommodations, all breakfasts, some group meals, all group excursions, and transportation in country.
The Program Fee does not include airfare to/from Thailand, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Bangkok, Thailand. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimated airfare. |
|
ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability SupportServices to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs. |

DIST 301-070: Disability Studies: Disability & Diversity inThailand (3 credits) |
We will learn about experiences of disability within Thai culture. Thailand offers students the opportunity to examine the influence of diverse religious, family, social service, and governmental approaches to disability that are largely different from the U.S. context while also sharing some common foci (e.g., improving inclusive education and employment outcomes for people with disabilities). We will consider disability from individual, family, and community perspectives across time with an emphasis on understanding issues of access and inclusion in everyday life. |
|
ENTR 451-070: International Social Entrepreneurship Ecosystems: Thailand (3 credits) |
The course allows students to gain an international context and understanding of the world of social entrepreneurship within a developing country context. While Thailand is a unique and vibrant cultural context for those coming from the States, there are actually many similarities between their social enterprise ecosystem and ours here in the U.S. Therefore, students will not only have the benefit of adding an international context to their knowledge of social entrepreneurship, but they will also receive ample time in the course comparing and contrasting the two country contexts. |
Prerequisite: All prerequisites waived. |
|
