UD students and professional mentors will support previous wells through evaluation and assess potential locations for new wells. EWB-UD has worked closely with Villages in Partnership (VIP), a local non-governmental organization (NGO) in Malawi for several years and will continue to work with them on this trip. In 2018, two borehole wells were drilled in Chilimani and in 2021, several borehole wells were inspected and rehabilitated by the team remotely. In 2022, the team returned to Malawi for the first time since 2019 to monitor and evaluate the success of the rehabilitation exercise completed in 2021. In 2023, two borehole wells in the communities of Liti and Nkagula were drilled. The team returned to Nkagula in 2024 to complete water testing on the wells established in 2023 and to determine locations for new wells to be drilled next summer. The team will continue this August in Khanda by drilling 1 to 2 wells in the communities identified last summer by VIP. All work is overseen by http://Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA), a non-profit organization that collaborates with 233 chapters on an international community program with more than 370 projects in 40 countries.
Students will stay on a farm, hosted by VIP, near the communities during the two-week period. Meals will be prepared at the farm, in the community, or at nearby eating establishments. The students will be supported by one to two professional mentors for the duration of the trip. |

ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs. |
