Program Overview

Join UD and the Atlantis Project for a unique study abroad experience in Trieste, Italy. Atlantis Project provides opportunities for students interested in medical school and other health professions to intern at public hospitals, shadow physicians in hospital settings, and to learn about the European healthcare system. The students will be assigned medical preceptors and will experience 75 hours of shadowing in a hospital setting. Students who participate in this study abroad experience will gain an international perspective on healthcare, discern whether a health career is right for them, and help fine-tune their career interest. Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, it is situated on the Adriatic coast, approx 90 minutes from Venice.

Although Italian language skills are not required, students who do speak Italian will improve their language skills while contributing to the local community by teaching local citizens how to speak better English. Each of these opportunities provide excellent ways for students to improve their organizational and leadership skills.

Study abroad experiences, shadowing physicians, and understanding a European healthcare system will help students to distinguish themselves as strong applicants for medical and other health-related professional schools.

The Program Fee includes housing, the academic shadowing experience, academic and cultural excursions and international medical insurance. Students will be housed in dormitories with WiFi access, including breakfast daily and approx. 4 other group meals per week.

The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from Italy, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Trieste. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. For this program, students will be given recommended flight itineraries for traveling together.

ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed.
