University of Delaware Institute for Global Studies
Winter 2018: Australia ELEG/MATH

Program Dates January 03, 2018 - February 01, 2018
This program is closed.

Program Overview Study mathematical modeling and computation science focusing on sustainable living in Melbourne, Australia. Australia is uniquely sensitive to sustainability concerns and Melbourne is a leading center of learning and industry. Students will enjoy the many advantages of summer in Melbourne, including visits to natural areas, athletic events, and seeing Australia's unique flora and fauna.

Based in Melbourne, you will interact with Australians as you study sustainability, modeling, and computation. You will learn about sustainability firsthand as you visit Australia's south coast and the Grampians National Park. In addition, we will visit CSIRO, Australia's science agency.

Students reside in dormitories at University College, part of the University of Melbourne, one of the world's great universities. Breakfast and dinner are provided.

Whether you are interested in modeling and computation, sustainability, the natural beauty of southeast Australia, or the wonderful charm of the Australian people, the Winter Session in Melbourne, Australia, is your chance to develop memories for a lifetime.

For more information about this program from the perspective of past participants, check out their UDAbroad blog posts.

The Program Fee includes housing in Uni Melbourne residence halls, all program-related excursions, some meals and international medical insurance.

The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from Australia, or airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Melbourne. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. For this program, students will be given recommended flight itineraries for traveling together. Those who arrive at the Melbourne airport at the appointed time will be able to take advantage of the group bus to their lodging, as for the return.. Students who opt to arrive at a different time are responsible for traveling to their lodging independently and at their expense as instructed by the faculty director.

Students who are U.S. citizens should also budget an estimated $20 to cover the cost of their ETA-Visa to enter Australia. Students who hold passports from other countries may have other visa requirements and/or additional expenses.

ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.

Courses: Students must enroll in all credit-bearing courses for a grade. Only the UNIV (zero credit) course may be taken pass/fail. Audit registration is not permitted on UD Travel Study. Please refer to the University Catalog to verify requirements and prerequisites. Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for approval (check before departure). All students must enroll in at least 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.
