Program Overview
Complete your student teaching in Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands and home to over 55,000 residents. Known for its natural beauty, picturesque beaches, coral reefs, underwater sea wall and shipwrecks, this island is a popular tourist destination and home to many banking, financial, and insurance institutions.

Student teaching takes place at the Cayman International School (CIS) in Grand Cayman. CIS is a high-quality educational institutional that is proud of its international diversity and the level of excellence it has achieved. This 60,000 square-foot facility includes a swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, athletic fields, arts venue and technology. A beautiful environment that is peaceful and welcoming is home to approximately 585 students from early childhood to grade 12, 95 staff, and five administrators representing 30 nationalities and providing a rich diversity of cultures and perspectives. All students are enrolled in a college preparatory program through an American based curriculum that is designed to respond to the individual needs of all students. CIS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (by the same accrediting body as UD), and offers a U.S. High School Diploma and the opportunity for students to earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma. All instruction is in English.

This program is a 12-week, full-day student teaching experience. An internship permit from the Cayman immigration ministry is required for participation. There is no charge, but accepted students will have to furnish required documents and work with the Cayman International School representative who will assist in obtaining the necessary permit before departure.

Classroom assignments may range from first through eighth grade, depending on students' needs for certification. Students will participate in the teaching hours and responsibilities of the primary classroom teacher. They will also be assigned an on-site clinical educator and will be supervised by a University of Delaware field instructor via electronic conferencing and video observations, although no University faculty or staff will accompany the students. CIS Cayman staff will be available to assist with any problems that may arise.

Prior to departure students are required to obtain the required permit from the Cayman immigration authorities to student teach. The host school and the faculty director will assist students with this process; there is no additional charge for the permit.

The Program Fee includes international health insurance, as well as housing in a furnished apartment to be shared with at least one other University of Delaware student, OR student housing at a local medical school.

The Program Fee does not include airfare to/from Grand Cayman or transportation to and from the airport . The program officially begins when students arrive in Grand Cayman. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining and how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimated airfare.

The Institute for Global Studies cooperates with the College of Education and Human Development on the administration of this program.

ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.

Courses: Students must enroll in all credit-bearing courses for a grade. Only the UNIV (zero credit) course may be taken pass/fail. Audit registration is not permitted on UD Travel Study. Please refer to the University Catalog to verify requirements and prerequisites. All students must enroll in at least 10 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course. All students enroll in EDUC 400 and EDUC 433. In addition, students in a middle school concentration will enroll in EDUC 436 (3 credits) or the middle school methods courses for their concentration area (EDUC 320, EDUC 404, EDUC 406, EDUC 348). Students may also enroll in additional online courses if they need them to complete their program or wish to be registered as a full-time student. Students should speak with an advisor to choose any additional courses.

When and how do I pay?
If you are offered acceptance to the program, you will have 3 days to withdraw without financial penalty. After the 3 days have passed, you will be officially accepted to the program, and IGS will post the full Program Fee and Tuition/Fees to your UD student account.

*All students will receive an email when they are accepted to a program and will have 10 days from that notification to make their $1,000.00 Initial Payment.
