Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the
UD coronavirus webpage for updates. If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students.
In this program, you will study International Finance and Travel Writing in the Italian regions of Tuscany and the Veneto. The program begins in Volterra, a small hill town in Tuscany; continues to Florence, the Renaissance heart of Italy; then to Paderno del Grappa, a quaint town at the foothills of the Italian Alps in the Veneto region; and concludes in Venice, la citta serenissima!
You will reside on two campuses. SIAF (Scuola Internazionale di Alta Formazione) in Volterra and the Instituto Filipin campus in Paderno. SIAF hosts business and educational groups throughout the year. The Paderno campus is a private Italian boarding school utilized by CIMBA (Consortium of Universities for International Studies) of which University of Delaware is a participating member. Our shorter stays in Florence and Venice will be in hotels/hostels.
The program's courses are FINC 392, Seminar in International Finance and ENGL 301, Advanced Composition: Travel, Culture, & Business which satisfies the University's second writing requirement for those who have earned at least 60 credits. Both course include a combination of lectures and group work in traditional classroom settings as well as integrating structured company visits/tours, city day trips, and cultural activities such as pizza making.
Both campus locations enable you to experience living in a small Italian community while providing access to business and cultural experiences of the regions. The major Tuscan and Veneto towns are home to many small and intermediate sized companies and several multi-national corporations in design, manufacturing, engineering, and agriculture. Prior programs have included day trips to Siena, Pisa, Padua, and Verona and company visits to Tommassini (road bicycles), Tecnica (ski boots & equipment), Risparmio di Volterra (bank), Nonno Nonni (cheese), Lamole di Lamole (olive oil & Chianti), Colle Vilca (crystal), and more. In addition, you will enjoy beautiful and majestic scenery while experiencing regional Italian food, culture, magnificent art, and treasured historical artifacts.
The Volterra and Paderno campuses offer a combination of double and single-occupancy rooms with internet connections and private bathrooms. They are full-service facilities with multi-media classrooms, cafeterias, residence halls, and study areas, and the Paderno campus has modern athletic facilities including an indoor swimming pool, cardio and weight rooms, and a gym. The cafeterias serve standard Northern (Paderno) & Tuscan (Volterra) Italian cuisines, and if you tire of the cafeteria, visit the local ristoranti in Volterra or the Al Sole Pizzeria and Alpina (pastry & caffe shop) in Paderno. All classes are in English, and there may be a “Survival Italian” session offered to enhance students' Italian experience. The staff on both campuses staff speak English.
For some added value, you will have opportunity for 2 weekends of personal travel to other cities and areas during the program, as well as the option to travel before and after. Rome and Milan are a mere 2-hour train ride from Florence; Verona, Bologna, Padua, and Vicenza are an hour or less from Paderno. We will have optional travel sessions to help you learn to navigate Italy's efficient train system.
If you’re interested in a chance to experience the incredible culture of Italy (ranked by UNESCO as one of the major World Heritage Sites for art and culture), this winter session is not to be missed. It will open the door to a broader, brighter, and more interesting world than you have ever experienced before. We look forward to your joining us!
The Program Fee includes dorm room accommodations and board (3 meals/day) at the Volterra and Paderno campuses. Also included are hotel/hostel accommodations in Florence and Venice with breakfast provided. Not included: airfare and personal travel costs.
The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from Europe, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Volterra.
