University of Delaware Institute for Global Studies
Summer 2023: Engineers Without Borders – EWB Malawi Project

Program Dates August 08, 2023 - August 25, 2023 (dates are tentative)
This program is closed.

Program Overview UD students and professional mentors will work to implement the drilling of two borehole wells in their partner communities of Liti and Nkagula. EWB-UD has worked closely with Villages in Partnership (VIP), a local non-governmental organization (NGO) in Malawi for several years and will continue to work with them on this trip. In 2018, two borehole wells were drilled in Chilimani and in 2021, several borehole wells were inspected and rehabilitated by the team remotely. In 2022, the team returned to Malawi for the first time since 2019 to monitor and evaluate the success of the rehabilitation exercise completed in 2021. The team will oversee the drilling, concrete pouring, and testing of two borehole wells. The well construction will be completed by an outside contractor. All work is overseen by Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA), a non-profit organization that collaborates with 233 chapters on an international community program with more than 370 projects in 40 countries.
Students will stay on a farm, hosted by VIP, near the communities during the two-week period. Meals will be prepared at the farm, in the community, or at nearby eating establishments. The students will be supported by two professional mentors for the duration of the trip.

ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.
