All applicants must have a valid passport by the program’s application deadline. Your passport’s expiration date must be more than six months after the program ends. If you do not have a current passport, apply through the U.S. State Department. It takes an average of 8-11 weeks (2-3 months) to process a passport.

If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. In this case, the University of Delaware will reimburse the cost of program fees, tuition and flights (if purchase was advised by CGPS).

Complete your Early Childhood Education (ECE) student teaching or Human Services – Clinical capstone internship (400 hours) in Athens, the capital and largest city in Greece. Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities, with history dating back to thousands of years. The city is home to the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and many impressive museums. Located in southeastern Europe, Greece is considered to be the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa.

This student teaching and internship experience take place at the American Community School (ACS) Athens. ACS Athens is a student-centered international school, embracing American educational philosophy, principles and values. The student body represents over 60 countries and is very culturally diverse. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges ( the same accreditation body as UD), and offers a U.S. High School Diploma and the opportunity for students to earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma. All instruction is in English.

For ECE student teachers, this program is a 12-week, full-day student teaching experience lasting just short of 90 days. Human Services students will complete 400 hours over the course which reflects an average of about 6 hours per day for 65 days. No visa is required for students who are U.S. citizens and who visit the country for fewer than 90 days. Students wishing to remain in Greece or the European Union for more than 90 days must apply for and obtain the appropriate visa on their own before departure.

Student teachers: Classroom assignments may range from pre-kindergarten through second grade, depending on students' needs for certification. Students will participate in the teaching hours and responsibilities of the primary classroom teacher. They will also be assigned an on-site clinical educator and will be supervised by a University of Delaware field instructor via electronic conferencing and video observations, although no University faculty or staff will accompany the students. ACS Athens staff will be available to assist with any problems that may arise.

Internship: Human Services students will work with the Dean of Students at ACS Athens in a variety of student support activities that could include school counseling (elementary or middle school level); the wellness center; working in the testing center; providing college/academic advisement; or working with the “Dogs in Learning” program (which focuses on empathy and responsibility in math and literacy). In addition, students have the opportunity to engage in “Community Service Activities” such as working with refugees, feeding the homeless at night, or visiting the homes of the elderly.

Note: Students are required to be present on the Newark campus to attend classes during the week prior to departure and for one day at the end of UD's semester and are responsible for all necessary lodging and transportation arrangements.

The Program Fee includes international health insurance, as well as housing in a furnished apartment with a kitchen to be shared with at least one other University of Delaware student near the ACS Athens or a metro line that can be used to travel to and from the school.

The Program Fee does not include airfare to/from Athens or transportation to and from the airport . The program officially begins when students arrive in Athens. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining and how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimated airfare.

The Center for Global Programs and Services (CGPS) cooperates with the College of Education and Human Development on the administration of this program.

ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.

Courses: All students must enroll in the 0-credit course UNIV 550 (placeholder for this travel study experience) and UNIV 372 (Discovery Learning marker).

When and how do I pay?
If you are offered acceptance to the program, you will have 3 days to withdraw without financial penalty. After the 3 days have passed, you will be officially accepted to the program, and IGS will post the full Program Fee and Tuition/Fees to your UD student account.

• An initial payment of $1000.00 will be due in mid-October.
• The balance of the Program Fee and Tuition/Fees will be due in early January.
• Payments are submitted through My Finances in UDSIS.
• All charges, once posted to your account, are considered non-refundable.
