Program Overview Note: This program requires the even exchange of students between UD and the partner institution abroad. Therefore the number of exchange spots available to outbound UD students is dependent on the number of inbound students sent to UD by the partner institution. If parity is not achieved, the exchange cannot take place.

If you do not have a current passport, you should be aware that COVID-19 has delayed passport processing times significantly. The U.S. State Department has announced that it now takes an average of 18 weeks (4.5 months) to process a passport.

Given the circumstances, if you want to study abroad in 2022, you need to apply for or renew your passport NOW - even if you’re not 100% sure about your study abroad plans yet. We recommend expediting both the processing time and the shipping time for your passport.

Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time.

The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates.

If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students. In this case, the University of Delaware will reimburse the cost of program fees, tuition and flights (if purchase was advised by CGPS).

The Trans-Atlantic Science Student Exchange Program (TASSEP) is a consortium of member universities from the European Union, Canada and the United States. Through strong academic advising by science faculty, who work in close cooperation with their study abroad offices, TASSEP ensures that students are properly advised about course selection and eases the problems of receiving credit for courses taken abroad. The goal is to permit students to take most of their normal junior level courses abroad and still be able to graduate on time.

TASSEP was conceived largely through the efforts of Prof. Nigel Rogers of the University of Lancaster, England and various study abroad departments at U.S. universities. The purpose was to expand the European science student exchange programs to the United States. These efforts bore fruit with the funding of a grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 1993 to a consortium of U.S. Universities, led by the project director, Prof. Tomas Baer of the University of North Carolina. A major effort during the first year of this grant was the recruitment of faculty advisors, who had an interest in study abroad. Meetings with European and American chemistry faculty and directors of the study abroad offices led to the formal agreement, which culminated in the signing of the memorandum of understanding.

The first students were sent abroad in the 1994-5 academic year. Twenty U.S. students from UNC, the University of Texas-Austin, Texas A&M, Franklin and Marshall, and Michigan State University attended European universities in Lancaster (England), Liege, Grenoble, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Jena, Glasgow (Strathclyde), and Dublin. In exchange about twenty EU students studied for the year at the various participating U.S. Universities.

The current Canadian members of the TASSEP consortium are: Dalhousie University, McMaster University, Queen's University, Simon Fraser University, Universite de Montreal, University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan, and University of Waterloo.

The current European members of the TASSEP consortium are: Aarhus University, Ecole Superieure de Chimie Physique Electronique, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität, Queens University Belfast, Technical University of Berlin, Technical University of Vienna, Trinity College, Universidad Complutense, Universite Joseph Fourier, University of Bologna, University of Geneva, University of Pais Vasco Bilbao Campus, University of Pais Vasco San Sebastian Campus, University of Paris 6, University of Paris-Sud, University of Pavia, and Université Paul Sabatier.

The current US members of the TASSEP consortium are: Franklin and Marshall College, North Carolina State University, Purdue University, Temple University, The University of Oregon, University of Delaware, University of Florida, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and University of Washington.

Language: The language of instruction depends on the university in Europe. The links to each university participating indicate the corresponding language of instruction.

Calendar: The calendars are generally similar to that of the University of Delaware but the specific dates are determined by each university. Please consult the TASSEP website for specific dates.

Visas and Passports: All students are required to obtain a student vsa before they can commence their studies at the European universities-participants. The process will vary by destination country.

A student visa application can only be completed once students have received their Confirmation of Enrolment Form from the participant university. This form is only released once students have paid all of the requested fees and met all of the conditions of their offer. Students should budget approximately $400 USD for visa fees and expenses.

Transportation: Transportation costs are borne by the students. Each university of the TASSEP has a description of transportation from nearby airports to the respective campuses.

Housing: Students are encouraged to live in university housing and to apply for such housing in advance. Every participant university has housing available; however, the reservation is a responsibility of the participating students. All students are required to stay in program sponsored housing, independent housing arrangements are not allowed by UD or the program partners.

ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.

Courses: All students must enroll in the 0-credit course UNIV 550 (placeholder for this travel study experience) and UNIV 372 (Discovery Learning marker). Courses are taught in English or the local language and can vary from semester to semester. Only courses completed with the equivalent grade of “C” or better will transfer back to UD. Participants in this exchange would enroll in 24-30 ECTS (European credits) in order to earn the equivalent of 12-15 UD credits per semester.

Before committing to the program students are encouraged to meet with their assistant dean or academic advisor to ensure that credits earned on the program will facilitate their progress towards graduation. It is the student's responsibility to secure the necessary UD transfer credit permissions prior to departure according to UD's standard transfer credit procedure, and to have an official transcript from the host institution sent to UD upon the conclusion of the exchange semester.

When and how do I pay?
If you are offered acceptance to the program, you will have 3 days to withdraw without financial penalty. After the 3 days have passed, you will be officially accepted to the program, and IGS will post the Tuition/Fees to your UD student account.

• An initial payment of $0.00 will be due in early April.
• The balance of the Tuition/Fees will be due in early August.
• Payments are submitted through My Finances in UDSIS.
• All charges, once posted to your account, are considered non-refundable.
