Traveling and studying abroad during a global pandemic poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad at this time must be prepared to adapt to the evolving situation and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country. Due to the rapidly changing and unpredictable global and local response to COVID-19, these rules, regulations and recommendations are subject to change at any time.

The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the UD coronavirus webpage for updates. If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students.

Enter the business and literary world in a country where English is one official language among many, a country that is home to many American corporations’ business processing offices, and to the largest democracy in the world. Experience New Delhi, India’s modern capital, and Old Delhi, the Mughal capital. Delhi is a constantly evolving city with modern malls alongside 11th century forts, and with a large and diverse student population. Travel east to the mountain town of Darjeeling (famous for its tea) and do a trek in the Himalayas. Discover the culture of Assam (also famous for its tea) doing service-learning, and take a safari in a wildlife sanctuary to see elephants and rhinos, and maybe tigers. The trip will include a visit to the Taj Mahal, and to Jaipur, the city of palaces.

Interact with employees in global/multicultural companies, and with students in different universities/colleges, and see how language and communication change with culture. Immerse yourself in service learning at a tribal school in Assam and develop fun projects for the children. Read a variety of Indian women writers and observe firsthand the world depicted in their works. Academic work will include reports and responses based on readings, empirical research and observations. We will even meet with a few award-winning writers..

The Program Fee includes all meals, all excursions, site visits, accommodation and transportation in India. All lodging is in double-occupancy rooms with twin beds in hostels. The Assam stay includes a visit to a wildlife sanctuary to see the Indian rhino in its natural habitat. The program fee also includes cultural components such as yoga lessons, classical dance sessions, etc. which will be made available according to student interest. The program also includes visits to businesses in Delhi, to Assam to see the silk weaving and the tea business up close, and to observe the culture of the Mother Goddess, to the Himalayas to study women in Buddhism, and to see the Taj Mahal.

The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from India, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in India. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare.

ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.
