Traveling and studying abroad at this time poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad must be prepared to adapt to evolving situations and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country which are subject to change at any time.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) and world events as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the
UD coronavirus webpage for updates. If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students.
Study diversity in secondary education in Barbados, a beautiful Caribbean island known both for being one of the most literate countries in the Caribbean and for recently transitioning from a British Commonwealth nation to an independent Republic. Here, you will engage in an exciting service learning partnership with local teachers, observe culturally relevant educational teaching methods, and learn to put them into practice as you work with students.
You’ll study the current educational landscape and experience the history, food, art, and music that animate Bajan culture, from the bustling capital of Bridgetown to the impossibly beautiful beaches. This program will feature several excursions that include meals, most likely including a snorkeling trip, visits with local artists, and the Oistins Fish Fry with its festival atmosphere.
Students will be housed in a complex on Barbados’ gorgeous west coast in air-conditioned, double-occupancy one-bedroom apartments with a kitchenette, living and dining rooms, and a safe. Students may self-cater or take advantage of the on-site restaurant. Wifi is available in public areas of the property. The complex is a short walking distance to the public bus and has easy access to the grocery store, shopping, restaurants, and the Caribbean sea.
If you are a Secondary Education major, an Educational Studies or a Race, Culture and Equity in Education minor, someone looking to fulfill a Multicultural or Discovery Learning requirement, or are just interested in education and inclusion, this Winter Session in Barbados is for you!
All students will register for EDUC419 (Diversity in Secondary Education), which includes a secondary school field placement.
The Program Fee includes housing, all program-related excursions, some meals, and international medical insurance. Students will be housed in a 3-star, self-catering apartment and are responsible for meals not included as part of program-sponsored excursions.
The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to or from the Barbados, nor airport transfers within the continental U.S. Students are responsible for their meals not specifically provided in the itinerary. The program officially begins when students arrive in the Bridgetown. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimated airfare.
