Traveling and studying abroad at this time poses new challenges and requires accepting a higher level of uncertainty than in the past. Students who choose to study abroad must be prepared to adapt to evolving situations and must take responsibility to act in accordance with the rules, regulations, and recommendations of UD, their program leadership, and legal authorities of their home and host country which are subject to change at any time.
The University will continue to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) and world events as we approach the departure date for this program. Please reach out to your program coordinator or faculty director with questions and continue to monitor the
UD coronavirus webpage for updates. If UD decides to cancel a study abroad program, we will communicate directly with affected students.
This program offers an opportunity understand how two small islands in the Caribbean are adapting to changes int the environment with different governance models. St. Lucia is an independent country with an Afro-Caribbean majority population and gained independence from the United Kingdom. Martinique is French territory and hence part of the European Union, even though it is 4,000 miles from the continent of Europe. We will explore how these islands are harnessing scarce water and energy resources and planning for natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and tsunamis. The adaptation responses to climate change will also be explored through field visits to sites and guest lectures by government officials, nonprofit organizations and industry. We will stay in comfortable hotel accommodations near the beach with time for recreational activities as well.
Students taking the program can enroll in GEOG449 - Environment and Society - which meets the following requirements: GE1A: Read Critically GE1B: Analyze Arguments and Information GE1C: Engage in Constructive Ideation GE2A: Communicate Effectively in Writing GE2B: Communicate Orally GE3A: Work Collaboratively Across Cultures GE3B: Work Independently Across Cultures. The course will also satisfy the field requirement for environmental studies and science majors.
ACCESSIBILITY: Students with disabilities are welcomed and encouraged to study abroad, but should be aware that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. This program also includes several hikes through tropical rainforests. Review
